About This New Program
Build Cool Stuff is a new STEM Mentorship program for middle school students. This program centers student voice and choice. Students brainstorm to generate problems that are relevant to their life and community, and then develop STEM-rooted solutions with the support of industry mentors who also share their career pathway experience. Following the pilot implementation this spring, we intend to scale the program across our 12 member school districts.
The program promotes the development of 21st Century skills (critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration) and provides meaningful mentorship for students. Engaging industry volunteers allows students to develop skills and learn more in-depth information about their mentors’ experiences, expertise, career pathway, and career opportunities.
The program provides greater access to career connected learning experiences for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) and underserved middle school students. In doing so, we will strengthen the diversity of the workforce pipeline in our region while increasing access to jobs with family-sustaining wages and upward mobility for groups underrepresented in STEM fields.
